    📘 Overview

A manual thumb for excavator and backhoe work: the Amulet B.R.U.T. — Best Rigid Universal Thumb — is a rigid, non-hydraulic thumb with four operating positions set by hand, so it needs no auxiliary circuit on the machine. It comes in two series that do genuinely different jobs. The CT Series (Convertible) covers machines up to 20,000 lb and can be upgraded to hydraulic later by swapping its telescopic strut for a cylinder. The NT Series (Nitro) covers 15,000–100,000 lb machines, is demolition rated, and is not upgradable. Each series is built either for a plain weld-on base plate or for a machine running a quick coupler.

Specify your excavator make, model and year, your series and your connector configuration when ordering.

As an excavator thumb, the B.R.U.T. is the answer when a hydraulic thumb is more machine than the job needs — or when the machine has no spare circuit to give it. On the smaller classes it is a mini excavator thumb at 60 lb; the largest NT is 1,500 lb. It ships as a complete excavator thumb kit — thumb, universal base and 4-position strut — so an excavator with thumb capability costs a fraction of a hydraulic conversion. Note that Amulet classes this as a rigid thumb, not a mechanical thumb for excavator use in the full-motion sense — their full-motion mechanical thumb is the HoeClamp, a separate product. If you want powered rotation instead, Amulet builds the PowerBrute and PowerClamp hydraulic thumbs.

🔩 CT Series vs NT Series — Which B.R.U.T. You Need

Series Machine Range Upgradable? Built For
    CT Series
    (Convertible)
Most machines up to 20,000 lb Yes — replace the telescopic strut with a hydraulic cylinder later Backhoe loaders and small excavators. Universally spaced tines, universal fit base, wide range of rotation, 4-position telescopic strut. Stores as a complete unit tight against the dipper
    NT Series
    (Nitro)
15,000 – 100,000 lb machine class No — rigid only Demolition rated. Unique multi-serrated tine profile, universal fit base, independent main pin, 4 operating positions. Built for demolition, land clearing, scrap and log handling

The two overlap between 15,000 and 20,000 lb, and that is where the decision is real: take the CT if you might want hydraulics on this thumb one day, and the NT if you want the demolition-rated multi-serrated profile and will never convert it. CT stands for “Convertible Thumb” — the upgrade path is the whole point of the series.

🔧 B.R.U.T. Rigid Thumb Key Features

    • No hydraulics required — no auxiliary circuit, no hoses up the stick, nothing to plumb. This is the reason most buyers choose a rigid thumb.
    • Four operating positions, set manually, so you can match the thumb opening to the material instead of running one fixed gap.
    • Universal fit base — the B.R.U.T. is not built for one machine model.
    • Independent main pin — the thumb does not share the bucket pin, so bucket changes are unaffected.
    • CT Series: upgradable to hydraulic by replacing the telescopic strut with a cylinder, without replacing the thumb.
    • CT Series: universally spaced tines that suit a wide range of buckets.
    • NT Series: multi-serrated tine profile and demolition rating for the heavier classes.
    • Stores tight against the dipper as a complete unit when not in use — no removal between jobs.
    • Heat-treated pins and low-maintenance construction. T-1 and AR400 steel.
    • 2-year warranty, 100% made in the USA at Amulet’s plant in Rathdrum, Idaho.

⭐ Why Choose a Rigid Thumb Over Hydraulic

    • Your machine may not have the circuit. Plenty of backhoes and older excavators have no spare two-way hydraulics, and adding them costs more than the thumb.
    • Nothing to leak, nothing to service. A rigid thumb has no cylinder, no hoses and no fittings — the failure modes of a hydraulic thumb simply do not exist.
    • It costs a fraction as much. On the smallest class the B.R.U.T. is well under half the price of the equivalent hydraulic thumb.
    • Four positions covers most work. If you handle broadly similar material, resetting the strut occasionally is not a real cost.
    • The CT keeps the option open. Buy rigid now, convert to hydraulic later by changing the strut — you are not locked out of powered rotation.
    • An excavator thumb attachment that survives a rental fleet. Universal fit, no hydraulics to abuse, minimal maintenance.

    ❓ B.R.U.T. Rigid Thumb — Common Questions

What is the difference between the CT Series and NT Series B.R.U.T.?

CT stands for Convertible Thumb. It covers most machines up to 20,000 lb and can be upgraded to hydraulic later by replacing its telescopic strut with a hydraulic cylinder — you do not have to buy a new thumb. The NT (Nitro) Series covers 15,000–100,000 lb machines, is demolition rated with a multi-serrated tine profile, and is rigid only. Between 15,000 and 20,000 lb both are available, so the question is whether you want the upgrade path or the demolition-rated profile.

Can I convert the B.R.U.T. to a hydraulic thumb later?

Yes, if you buy the CT Series. The rigid 4-position CT model converts to hydraulic by replacing the telescopic strut with a hydraulic cylinder, so the thumb body, base and pins stay in place. The NT Series is not upgradable.

Does the B.R.U.T. need hydraulics on my machine?

No. The B.R.U.T. is a rigid, manually set thumb with no cylinder, no hoses and no auxiliary circuit requirement. Its four operating positions are set by hand. That is the main reason to choose it over a hydraulic thumb — many backhoes and older excavators have no spare two-way hydraulics, and adding them costs more than the thumb does.

What does “4 positions” actually mean?

The B.R.U.T. has four fixed settings for the thumb’s angle, set on the telescopic strut. You choose the position that suits the material you are handling and it stays there for the job. It is not powered rotation — if you need to change the opening constantly while working, a hydraulic thumb is the right tool.

What is the difference between the weld-on and coupler B.R.U.T.?

Both use a weld-on base plate. The standard build is for a machine running a plain pin-on bucket; the coupler pin-on build is for a machine with a quick coupler between the stick and the bucket. Order the one that matches your machine — the geometry differs.

    Which B.R.U.T. fits my machine?

The B.R.U.T. is sold by machine weight class, from 1-3 Ton through 30-40 Ton. Find your machine in the compatibility table on this page to identify its weight class, then select that class plus your series and connector. Specify make, model and year at checkout. If your machine is not listed, message us on chat or email support@eskidsteer.com with the make, model and year.

Is the B.R.U.T. suitable for demolition?

The NT Series is demolition rated and Amulet builds it specifically for demolition, land clearing, scrap and log handling with a multi-serrated tine profile. The CT Series is built to excel in demolition, rip rap and land clearing on smaller machines but is the lighter-duty of the two.

Will the thumb get in the way when I am digging?

No. All B.R.U.T. models are designed to store as complete units tight against the dipper when not in use, so normal bucket work is unaffected and the thumb does not need removing between jobs.

What warranty comes with the B.R.U.T.?

The B.R.U.T. carries Amulet’s 2-year warranty and is 100% manufactured in the USA at Rathdrum, Idaho. Because it is non-hydraulic, there are no hydraulic components carrying a shorter warranty term.

How is shipping calculated on the B.R.U.T.?

Shipping is calculated automatically at checkout. Add the thumb to your cart and enter your delivery address and the freight cost is quoted before you pay. B.R.U.T. weight runs from 60 lb to 1,500 lb across the range, so freight varies by class and series.

How do I order a B.R.U.T. rigid thumb?

Order directly on eskidsteer.com. Select your machine weight class, series and connector configuration above, add to cart and complete checkout, specifying your make, model and year. Everything you need to choose the right model is on this page; if anything is still unclear, chat or email support@eskidsteer.com and we will answer before you order.
