Description
The Digga A4 skid steer auger bit is a general-purpose auger built for earth, clay and shale, available in twelve diameters from 6" to 36" on a 48" overall length with a 2" hex hub. Two tooth configurations decide which you order: Light Conditions – Earth uses TS bladed teeth for general soil, while Heavy Conditions – Hard Ground fits multi-faced tungsten (MFT) teeth brazed onto the tooth face for longer wear life and greater cutting performance in compacted and abrasive ground. Digga’s TRU-CUT head geometry means a 12" auger drills a 12" hole rather than an oversized one you backfill with concrete. Every bit ships with pin, clip, teeth and pilot fitted, and suits Digga 1MDS through 4DSS drives on carriers from 0.75 to 4.5 tonnes.

| Earth | 55–65 RPM |
| Clay | 45–55 RPM |
| Fracturable rock | 20–45 RPM |
The A4 is a general-purpose earth auger and is not suited to harder fracturable rock — for combination rock and earth drilling, the RC4 taper-tooth bit is the correct choice.
| Model option | Teeth fitted | Pilot | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light Conditions – Earth | TS-1 outer, TS-C-1 inner — bladed steel | PM-SQ-1 | General earth, loam, sand, soft clay and shale |
| Heavy Conditions – Hard Ground | TS-3 outer, TS-C-3 inner — multi-faced tungsten (MFT) | PM-SQ-3 | Compacted and hard ground, abrasive soils, granulated or soft fracturable rock |
Diameter guidance: 6"–12" for fence posts and sign posts; 14"–24" for deck footings and pier foundations; 30"–36" for larger commercial piers on machines with the torque and down-pressure to turn them. All twelve diameters share the same 48" overall length and 2" hex hub.
The A4 uses a 2" hex hub and suits Digga 1MDS through 4DSS drives — covering the 1DSS, 2DSS, 3DSS and 4DSS standard-flow range and the 1MDS mini machine drive. Digga XO20 outer extensions add drilling depth beyond the 48" bit length in one-foot increments without buying a longer auger. Check the maximum drilling diameter published for your drive and machine class before selecting a large bit.
The A4 is an auger bit, not a machine attachment — compatibility is to the auger drive it mounts on, not directly to a carrier. Digga rates the A4 range for drives fitted to micro and mini excavators, skid steer loaders and mini loaders from 0.75 to 4.5 tonnes (1,600–9,900 lbs).
You need a Digga auger drive with a 2" hex output shaft — the 1MDS, 1DSS, 2DSS, 3DSS or 4DSS. Larger drives use a 2.5" or 3" hex shaft and take the A6 or A8 bit range instead. Add your drive model at checkout and we check the hub matches before the order ships. Stay within the maximum drilling diameter your drive and machine class supports.
Choose Light Conditions – Earth (TS-1 / TS-C-1 bladed teeth) for general soil, loam, sand and soft clay. Choose Heavy Conditions – Hard Ground for compacted, abrasive or granulated ground: it fits TS-3 and TS-C-3 multi-faced tungsten teeth brazed onto the tooth face, which hold an edge far longer in punishing material. If you regularly hit fracturable rock, the RC4 combination bit is the better tool than either A4 option.
For 4x4 and 6x6 fence posts, 6" to 12" covers most work. Deck footings and pier foundations usually call for 14" to 24". Commercial piers run 30" to 36", but only on a drive and carrier with the torque and down-pressure to turn that diameter — check your drive’s published maximum drilling diameter first.
The A4 has a 2" hex hub and fits Digga 1MDS through 4DSS drives. If your drive has a 2.5" or 3" hex output shaft, you need the A6 or A8 range instead. Digga also offers hex adapters if you are matching a bit to a different shaft size.
Yes — that is what Digga’s TRU-CUT head geometry is for. Many augers cut oversize, which means backfilling every hole with more concrete than the design called for. The A4 holds its nominal diameter.
Yes. Every A4 ships with pin, clip, teeth and pilot fitted. Replacements are available separately — TS-1 and TS-C-1 teeth with the PM-SQ-1 pilot for the earth configuration, TS-3 and TS-C-3 with the PM-SQ-3 pilot for the MFT configuration.
The A4 is 48" overall, so usable depth is less than that once the drive and hub are accounted for. Digga XO20 outer extensions add depth in one-foot increments — stack them to reach the depth you need rather than buying a longer bit for occasional deep work.
Digga publishes 55–65 RPM in earth, 45–55 RPM in clay and 20–45 RPM in fracturable rock. Slowing down in harder ground protects the teeth and gives a cleaner hole.
The A4 is a general-purpose earth auger with bladed teeth, ideal for earth, clay and shale but not suited to harder fracturable rock. The RC4 is an all-purpose taper-tooth bit with double tungsten teeth on the outside and single taper teeth inside, designed for combination drilling from earth through to medium rock.
Yes — teeth and the pilot are the consumable items and are replaceable individually, so the tube and flights stay in service. That is why they are stocked as separate part numbers.
Shipping is calculated at checkout — add the item to your cart, enter your delivery address, and the shipping charge is shown before you complete your order. Lift gate service is available for residential deliveries and can be selected at checkout.
Add the item to your cart and check out online — the order page asks for your machine make and model, so there is no need to call ahead. We check the mount against your machine after the order and come back to you if anything needs changing. If you would rather ask first, email support@eskidsteer.com or use the chat button on your screen.
The A4 is the general-purpose member of the Digga auger bit family. Contractors searching for an earth auger bit, a skid steer auger bit, or specifically an auger bit 12 inch for deck footings will find that size in this listing. Replacement auger teeth are stocked separately so a worn head is a consumable rather than a new bit, and the same range serves as a mini excavator auger bit on smaller carriers or a skid steer post hole digger bit on full-size machines.
