    📘 Overview

Quality Chain skid steer tire chains in 4-link spacing carry a cross chain every four side-chain links, which is the pattern most operators run for general winter and mud work because it costs less and adds less rolling weight than a 2-link pattern while still driving 8 mm (5/16 inch) square link alloy steel into the surface. Quality Chain rates that alloy square link for more traction and longer service life than the carbon steel round twist chains that dominate the budget end of the category. Fitment is decided by tire size rather than machine brand, and the decision on this page is which of three sizes you run: 10x16.5, 12x16.5 or 14x17.5, each of which covers a group of equivalent metric and flotation sizes listed below. Every pair includes the Quality Chain 0216 six-arm spider bungee, the tightener Quality Chain specifies for 12 to 18 inch skid steer rims. The chains can be cut shorter link by link while you fit them, which is how one part number covers a whole group of tire sizes. Price shown is for a pair, meaning two chains, enough for one axle. Most tire chains for skid loader work go out in this 4-link pattern; the 2-link version of the same chain is stocked separately for operators who need the denser bar spacing.

⚙ What Makes the Quality Chain 4-Link Square Link Chain Different

    • 8 mm square link alloy cross chain. These are square link tire chains, not round twist: square links present a flat edge to the ground instead of the rolled profile of a twist link, and Quality Chain publishes the alloy square link as delivering more traction and a longer life than the carbon steel round twist chain in the same fitment.
    • 4-Link ladder spacing. A cross chain lands every four links of the side chain. That is wider spacing than the 2-link pattern, which is what keeps the price and the added rolling weight down while still delivering ladder-chain traction.
    • Ladder pattern built for industrial equipment. Quality Chain catalogues these skid loader tire chains under skid steer rather than adapting a passenger or light truck chain, so the side chain length and cross chain count are set for skid steer tire sizes rather than car sizing that happens to go around the tire.
    • 0216 spider bungee in the box. The blue six-arm spider bungee Quality Chain specifies for 12 to 18 inch forklift and skid steer rims ships with every pair, which is the tightener the fitment chart calls for on all three of these sizes.
    • Cut to length during fitting. Quality Chain's mounting procedure has you drive the chain onto the tire, mark the overlap and remove the excess links, so one part number fits a group of tire diameters rather than a single exact size.
    • Non-studded. These are plain square link chains with no studs, which matters because the state restrictions Quality Chain flags on paved roads apply to studded chains, not to this line.

🔑 Why Operators Buy the 4-Link Chain

    • The cheaper way into alloy square link. Wider cross-chain spacing uses less chain than the 2-link pattern, so an operator who wants square link alloy rather than carbon steel round twist can get there without paying for the densest pattern.
    • Less rolling weight on the machine. Fewer cross chains means less mass being lifted and dropped by each tire rotation, which is worth having on lighter skid steers and on jobs where the chains go on and come off repeatedly.
    • Faster to handle. A 4-link pair is the lighter of the two patterns to drag out, lay behind the tire and hook up, which matters when chains are fitted in a yard in the dark rather than in a shop.
    • No separate tensioner purchase. The 0216 bungee that Quality Chain's own fitment chart specifies for these three tire sizes ships in the box, so the chain gets tensioned correctly on day one.
    • One part number covers a size group. Because the chain is cut to fit during mounting, the 12x16.5 part also covers 31x13-16.5, 33/12-20, 305/70-16.5 and ten more equivalents, so a mixed fleet on similar rubber can standardise on one chain.

📋 Choosing Your 4-Link Chain Size

There is one choice on this listing, and it is tire size. All three options use the same 8 mm square link alloy cross chain and the same 4-link spacing, so nothing about traction or construction changes between them:

    • 10 x 16.5 - the smallest of the three, covering 10x16.5, 31x5x9, 31x6x10, 31/10-20, 260/70-16.5, 10/75-15.5 and 10-16.5.
    • 12 x 16.5 - the most common skid steer size, and the 12x16.5 skid steer tire chains carry the widest fitment group here, covering carry the widest fitment group here, covering 12x16.5, 12-16.5, 31x13-16.5, 31x15.5-15, 31x12.50-16.5, 33x6x10, 33x6x11, 33/12-20, 36x13.5-15, 305/70-16.5, 300/75-15, 315/55-20 and 12.5/70-16. If your sidewall reads 12-16.5 rather than 12x16.5, this is still the right part - 12-16.5 skid steer tire chains are the same fitment group.
    • 14 x 17.5 - the largest option, covering 14x17.5, 33x7x11, 33x15.5-16.5, 36/14-20, 12.0-18 and 355/70-17.5.

🚜 Will These Skid Steer Tire Chains Fit My Machine?

Quality Chain builds these as tire chains for skid steer loaders rather than adapting a car chain that happens to go round the rubber, and fitment is decided by tire size, not by a quick attach plate, a coupler or a machine brand. Chains for skid steer tires are sized off the sidewall: read the size printed on your tire, match it in the table below, and the chain fits regardless of whether the loader is a Bobcat, a Caterpillar, a John Deere, a Case, a New Holland, a Takeuchi, a Kubota or a Gehl. Quality Chain publishes no machine model list for this line because it does not need one.

Three things decide fitment beyond the size itself. These chains mount on tires, so they do not fit a compact track loader or any machine running rubber tracks. The chain needs room to hang over the sidewall and swing without striking hoses, sensors or the loader arm, which Quality Chain asks you to check by pre-fitting before the first job. And because tires vary with age, brand, tread and wear, the chain is designed to be shortened during mounting rather than to arrive at an exact length.

Everything needed to confirm fitment is on this page - read your tire sidewall, match it in the table above and add the chains to your cart to see delivered pricing for your address. If your size is not in the table, email support@eskidsteer.com or message us on chat with the sidewall marking.

Inspect before you sign. Chains ship as a heavy palletised or boxed freight item. Note any damage to the packaging on the Bill of Lading before the driver leaves - a signed clean delivery receipt makes a carrier claim far harder to win. Photograph anything questionable and email support@eskidsteer.com.

❓ 4-Link Skid Steer Chain Questions, Answered

How do I know which tire size to order?

Read the size printed on the sidewall of your skid steer tire and match it against the fitment table on this page. Quality Chain groups the 4-link skid steer chain into three parts - 1501HDSL for the 10x16.5 group, 1502HDSL for the 12x16.5 group and 1503HDSL for the 14x17.5 group - and each part covers a list of equivalent metric and flotation sizes, so an exact string match on the sidewall is not required as long as your size appears in one of the groups.

Do I get one chain or two?

The price on this listing is for a pair, which is two Quality Chain 4-link chains. That covers one axle of a skid steer. Operators who want all four wheels chained order two pairs.

What is the difference between 4-link and 2-link spacing?

The number describes how often a cross chain crosses the tread: 4-link spacing puts one across every four links of the side chain, 2-link puts one across every two. Quality Chain states that the closer 2-link pattern offers better coverage and increased traction, and it costs more and adds more rolling weight to do it. If you want the denser pattern, see the 2-link version of these chains. Everything else - the 8 mm square link alloy cross chain, the three tire size options, the included 0216 bungee - is identical.

Is 4-link spacing enough traction for a snow contractor?

For general winter work, yard duty and mud, the 4-link Quality Chain chain does the job and is the pattern most operators run. For commercial snow removal on packed and icy lots, where the machine is pushing loaded buckets all shift, the closer cross-chain spacing of the 2-link version is the better buy - the extra cross chains are exactly what stops a wheel breaking loose under load.

Why square link alloy instead of a cheaper round twist chain?

A square link presents a flat edge to the ground where a twist link presents a rolled surface, and Quality Chain publishes its alloy square link as providing more traction and a longer life than the carbon steel round twist chain covering the same tire sizes. On a machine that runs chains all season the difference shows up as a longer replacement interval, not just better grip on day one.

Is a tightener included, or do I need to buy one separately?

The Quality Chain 0216 spider bungee is included with every pair on this listing. It is the blue six-arm bungee Quality Chain specifies for 12 to 18 inch forklift and skid steer rims, and it is the tightener Quality Chain's own fitment chart calls for on all three of these 4-link chain sizes. Quality Chain asks that eye protection be worn whenever a rubber bungee or tightener is installed.

How are these chains installed on a skid steer?

Quality Chain's mounting procedure for its straight link chains is to lay the chain out behind the tire, attach a rope to both side chains next to the fasteners, pass the rope over the tire between the lugs and drive the machine forward so the chain is pulled up onto the tire. If the ends overlap, mark the links, take the chain off, cut out the excess and repeat. Hook the inside fastener as tight as it will close, then the outside fastener, then fit the 0216 bungee to take up the remaining slack.

Can these chains be shortened to fit my tires?

Yes, and Quality Chain expects it. The mounting instructions include marking and removing excess links when the chain ends overlap on the tire, which is how one part number covers a group of tire sizes that vary by brand, tread and wear. Cut the chain down before the first working shift rather than running it loose.

How fast can I drive with these chains fitted?

Quality Chain's limit is 30 MPH. Travelling faster increases the chance of component failure, and speeds over 30 MPH void the warranty along with improper fit and improper installation. If a chain breaks, stop and remove it immediately rather than finishing the pass.

What warranty comes with Quality Chain tire chains?

Quality Chain warrants its chains free from defects in workmanship and material for 30 days from the date of delivery. That warranty is void if the chains are run above 30 MPH, fitted improperly or installed improperly. Quality Chain also states it will not warranty alloy wheels or wheel covers damaged by chains or chain tighteners, which is why pre-fitting and checking clearance matters before the first job.

Are tire chains legal to use where I work?

Quality Chain states that tire chains are legal in all 50 states and are required in certain areas. Some states restrict studded chains on paved roads - that restriction does not apply to these chains, which are plain square link with no studs. Chain requirements vary by state, so check your state Department of Transportation guidance for road use.

Will these fit a compact track loader?

No. These are tire chains and they mount on a pneumatic tire. A compact track loader running rubber tracks needs a track-specific product, not a tire chain. If your machine is a wheeled skid steer, read the size off the tire sidewall and match it in the fitment table on this page.

How much is shipping and when is it calculated?

Shipping is calculated at checkout. Add the chains to your cart, enter your delivery address, and the shipping charge is displayed before you complete the order. Lift gate service is available for residential deliveries and can be selected at checkout.
